- How soon after a conception do the first signs of pregnancy appear?
First signs of pregnancy can appear as soon as you miss your period or within 7 days of missing the period. Every woman is different. So are her experiences of pregnancy. Not every woman has the same symptoms or even the same symptoms from one pregnancy to the next.
Also, because the early symptoms of pregnancy are often like what happens right before and during menstruation, those symptoms aren’t always recognized.
2. Week by Week Pregnancy: What to Expect?
First 2 weeks:ย The first pregnancy symptom for most women is light bleeding and light cramping that occurs about six to 12 days after conception due to implantation of the embryo. Another common and early sign of pregnancy is a missed menstrual period. Swollen and tender breasts usually also occur about one to two weeks into pregnancy, as well as fatigue.
2 to 12 weeks: Between 2 to 12 weeks women may experience nausea or โmorning sickness.โ The severity of this first trimester symptom varies among women. Expectant moms may also experience headaches and backaches during this phase. Other symptoms are salivation changes, mood changes, feeling of warmth and breast discomfort.
13 to 27 weeks: Your belly will grow, your nipples may darken in color and your breasts may continue to feel tender and swollen. Face pigmentation may increase. You may start feeling active fetal movements after 18 weeks.
27 to 40 weeks: Uterus enlarges progressively. Frequency of urination increases. Fetal movements are more pronounced and frequent. You may feel lightening around 37 weeks. Some may have constipation.
3. ย Are early pregnancy cramps similar in severity to menstrual cramps? How can one distinguish between the two?
Early pregnancy cramps are mild dull pains with slight lower abdominal discomfort. But if severe menstrual pain like cramps is there then it could be a sign of threatened abortion or abnormal pregnancy.
4.ย ย ย ย ย How is spotting different from menstrual bleeding?
The quantity of blood discharged through the vagina is what mainly differentiates the two. In a menstrual period, there is a heavy flow of blood and can last for an average of three to five days, whereas in spotting, the discharge of blood is sporadic or irregular. Spotting may occur as part of the menstrual cycle; however, it can be an indication of pregnancy or an underlying condition.
5.ย ย ย ย Most women complain of some kind of physical discomfort before they actually discovered their pregnancy. How accurate is this account?
Some women experience pregnancy symptoms due to the shift in hormones, tiny changes take place in the body that alert the woman that she may be pregnant even before a positive pregnancy test. Women who develop these symptoms before a missed period are, likely, very in tune with their body and are sensitive to even the tiniest hormonal changes. These very early pregnancy symptoms may occur up to a week before there are enough pregnancy hormones circulating in the body to give a positive pregnancy test result.
6.ย ย ย ย ย Some women report โfeelingโ pregnant. Is there any scientific backing to that?
The hormones mainly progesterone and some oestrogen and HCG increases during pregnancy, which contribute to many of the early physical signs of pregnancy. Progesterone rises premenstrually, but continues to rise further after the period is missed. Most women don’t get pregnancy signs until after their period is missed and the hormones increase to levels that their body is not used to. However, a few women do get pregnancy signs earlier, especially if they have had a baby before, because their body is more sensitive to the hormones and they know they ‘feel different’ than just pre-menstrual. Women with twins, triplets of more may notice their pregnancy signs sooner or they may be more intense, because they have higher levels of HCG in their system.
7.ย ย ย ย ย Is an elevated basal body temperature a sure shot symptom of pregnancy?
By about 6 weeks after the last normal period, the amount of blood flowing around a woman’s newly pregnant body increases by up to 50%. Blood flow to her skin increases, making her feel warmer, often sweating more (particularly in her hands and feet). Her metabolism also increases by about 20%, creating more body heat. A pregnant woman’s temperature will often rise to about 37.8 degree Celsius (or about 100.4 degree Fahrenheit), when it is normally 37 degree Celsius (or 98.6 degree Fahrenheit) when not pregnant.
